THE AUTOMATIC CALCULATION OF JIG PILLAR HEIGHTS

This article describes how digital computing techniques can be used to solve a problem which, by traditional methods, takes a considerable amount of time and is also subject to manual inaccuracies. The problem concerns the calculation of jig pillar heights for weldment jigs of the type used by shipbuilding firms in their fabrication shops. The article explains how the manual method works, and then explains how the computer simulation method operates. A description of the computer output is included, and several advantages of the computer method, among them the elimination of data recording and the linking of the program with a computer produced ship's database, with the result that the calculation of jig pillar heights becomes an integral part of the overall design procedure are also given.
