NHK SPRING-DEVELOPED WET WALL INSULATION SYSTEM

A second generation containment system, for use aboard liquefied gas carrying vessels, is described. This containment system utilizes no special metals or alloys, rather it consists of interior and exterior insulations, the interior made of polyurethane foam and glass fiber layer, and the exterior consisting of a second layer of foam and plywood pallet. This insulation has been tested with liquid nitrogen at minus 196 degrees, and has come through successfully. Cost savings, up to ten percent of the vessel's cost, other advantages of the system including; no special requirements imposed on tanker design, no special steels required, and lower tanker operating costs, among others, are listed, and the basic system design are all given and discussed in the article.
