DEVELOPMENT OF WATER-MIST SEPARATOR OF IMPINGEMENT TYPE

In order to lower the temperature of intake air after compression by turbocharging, the air is cooled through the air cooler before being supplied to the cylinders. In this case, there may be a possibility that the relative humidity of the air exceeds 100% and considerable water is condensed after compression and cooling. If this condensed water is carried to the cylinders, it may cause abnormal wear of piston rings and liners, and abnormal corrosion on the sliding surface of the liner. This article describes the development of a water mist separator in order to remove the condensed water droplets from the charging air while keeping its temperature at a considerably lower level. Reasons for the selection of the impingement type of separator, and the results of model testing are given. Actual results of testing on a ship's engine during a voyage from Japan to the U.S. East Coast are also included and discussed.
