PROPOSED NUCLEAR VLCC DESIGNED WITH HIGH SAFETY FACTOR

A proposed design for a VLCC which will be powered by nuclear energy, but which can also switch over to conventional boilers if and when it becomes necessary, is presented. Besides having two different types of propulsion systems, this vessel will have certain elements added to protect the environment against the effects of collision or grounding, and these include a longitudinal cofferdam, right down to centerline, a full double bottom, and "mini" wing cargo tanks which insulates the outer shell of the ship from the larger cargo tanks, among other features. The rationale for designing a ship with two different propulsion systems and a centerline cofferdam is given. Elements of both propulsion systems are described, and options for an inert gas system are also discussed.
