SUPERTANKERS CAN OFFLOAD AT PORTO TORRES
The first large buoy in the Mediterranean Sea for taking discharge from tankers of up to 300,000 dwt began operation on 10/16/70, taking the 205,000 ton payload of the oil tanker "Texaco Europe". The unloading buoy is connected by a 4000 m long sea line to the shore and from there by a 2800 m long pipe to a storage terminal with a capacity for 80,000 tons, which is already in operation and consists of ten tanks, four more tanks soon to be put into service, and another ten tanks under construction. The facilities will serve the needs of Societa Italiana REsine's Porto Torres petrochemical complex. The buoy has two concentric sections assembled in such a way that a tanker, moored to the buoy at its bow, need not interrupt its unloading operations during rough weather; the outer casing of the buoy will rotate with the moving hose connection. The buoy can receive effectively under conditions of cargo discharge at high pumping rates, in rough seas at wind speeds of up to 150 km/hr. The maximum receiving capacity of the structure is 10,000-13,000 tons/hr. E.N.I. has started work on doubling a part of the Ferrera-Genoa section of the Central European Pipeline; the project is to be completed in the middle of 1971. The capacity of the pipeline will thus be raised to an over-all 500 million tons/yr.
