FIRST OFFSHORE MOORING SYSTEM WILL SERVE HUMBLE REFINERY

Construction of the U.K.'s first single buoy mooring system has begun in the estuary of the River Humber, as part of the $7.1 million project that includes construction of storage tanks and marine and land pipelines to serve the Continental Oil Co.'s new refinery at South Killingholme. The mooring system that is being built by Crude Oil Terminals (Humber) on behalf of Continental Oil Co. is designed to handle tankers of up to 200,000 dwt with initial plans for 110,000 dwt tankers, and is expected to be completed by the end of 1970. The Mersey Docks and Harbour Board's $108 million man-made island 11 mi off the Welsh coast in Liverpool Bay designed for 70 million tons/yr throughput of crude oil and also to provide storage for 1.25 million tons is described and two other projects, one by London & Thames Haven Oil Wharves Ltd., involving reclaiming the Maplin Sands off the Essex coast to provide a channel and dock for 500,000 dwt tankers, and the other by the Milford Haven Conservancy Board, are also mentioned.
