ANCHOR SYSTEM HOLDS TANK SECURELY ON BOTTOM
A huge 500,000 bbl storage tank in 158 ft of water in the Arabian Gulf off the Trucial Coast State of Dubai has been anchored securely to the bottom by 34 pilings 45 in. in dia and 88 ft long. The tank, built by Chicago Bridge and Iron Co., is 205 ft high and 270 ft in dia. The anchoring system must be designed to resist tremendous vertical forces either up or down, as well as lateral forces imposed by tides and currents. When the tank is filled with water it is negatively buoyant and its entire weight, 15,000 short tons, rests on the piling and ocean bottom. When the tank is full of oil, the positive buoyancy creates an upward thrust of 15,760 short tons.
