TANKER MOORING SYSTEM
Wellman International Engineering Ltd.'s new energy-absorbing mooring system centers around a tensioned buoy which permits moored vessels to swing freely in wind and current without affecting loading or unloading. The main body of the buoy can be submerged so that it is below major wave action, giving the whole structure a degree of stability lacking in conventional mooring systems. The system utilizes the patented Kohring surge control head which absorbs energy up to 20,000 ft-tons over a stroke or deflection of 25-30 ft and takes bollard pulls up to 1000 tons. The equipment can rotate through 360 deg. Sheathed, oil-filled cables or sheathed parafil hawsers are used in preference to a conventional chain system since they are better able to withstand sea conditions.
