HOW SHELL-BP'S NIGERIAN TANKER LOADING TERMINAL WAS BUILT

A 48 in, dia, 17 mi long submarine pipeline from a tank farm near the mouth of the Forcados River in Nigeria branches at an offshore control platform in 90 ft of water, with each 48 in. branch line going another mile to a single-buoy mooring (SBM) system. Construction of the pipeline and terminal for Shell-BP Petroleum Development Co. of Nigeria Ltd. was carried out in 1968-69 by Brown & Root (U.K.) Ltd., J. Ray McDermott & Co., and other contractors. Fabrication of the control platform and preparation of the 48 in. coated pipe for laying was performed in Holland. Details of the construction operation are given.
