INVESTIGATION OF BOGGY ACTION IN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS ON NATIONAL HIGHWAY-28
At the Joint Advisory Committee Meeting of the UP, PWD and the University of Roorkee, failures of black topped pavements in UP state were discussed ant the University was requested to carry out some investigations to identify reasons for failure and to suggest remedial measures. Typical sections of National Highway-28 near Lucknow were investigated, which were showing severe boggy action under heavy commercial traffic. Extensive field and laboratory testing was carried out on some failed and sound pavement sections. Entrapment of surface water in the layers of the pavement, low permeability of the subgrade and inadequate drainage facilities were found to be the major factors causing the deterioration. Recommendations for the rehabilitation of the pavement have been made, which deal with improvement of the surface and subsurface drainage facilities, incorporation of capillary cut-off layer/prefabricated water-proofing membrane and adequate pavement thickness for supporting heavy axle loads.
