ENERGY ABSORBING MOORING DEVICE
An energy absorbing mooring device is able to absorb very high rates of energy either by a fender action in the case of quayside fenders and dolphins, or by a bollard pull reaction when used with single point moorings. As a single point mooring device it can dissipate energy of the order of 10,000 to 20,000 ft tons over a stroke of 25-30 ft. Bollard pulls on the order of 500-1000 tons would be expected under such conditions. As a single point mooring the equipment can rotate through 360 deg and would allow a moored ship to surge up to 40 ft. The equipment would be installed on a rigid structure, allowing the mooring to be solidly connected to the associated pipeline without the need for submerged flexible hoses.
