The discussion covers the usefulness of these columns in locations where loading problems arise due to depth or distance from shore (as in the North Sea, Alaska, the Persian Gulf, etc.); the advantages of U-jointed columns over artificial islands, mooring dolphins, and single-point mooring buoys; the principles of column construction and operation as a production column; flares; equipment support; procedure for transport, immersion, mooring, and remotely controlled connection to sea-floor pipelines; equipment and personnel on board; and capacity to absorb stresses developed in mooring tankers.
