A MONOBUOY SYSTEM AS A SOLUTION TO AN OPEN SEA TERMINAL
A monobuoy of the Shall Single Mooring Buoy (SBM) type was installed by Petrobas (Petroleo Brasileiro S.A.) at Tramandai, Brazil, on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul. From July 1968 to the middle of May 1969, the system successfully handled 26 oil tankers ranging in size from 36,000 to 105,000 dwt. A great advantage of the monobuoy in adverse sea conditions is the freedom of the tanker to turn freely about the mooring point no matter how often the direction of wind or tides may change during loading or unloading. The development and use of monobuoys elsewhere in the world is discussed.
