THE NBC MARKET ANALYSIS PROJECT

Although revenue support grants provide alternative means of finance for passenger fares, the availability of such sources of finance is limited and subject to overall restraints on public spending. The Market Analysis Project (MAP) described was intended to achieve a more detailed understanding of bus public transport demand and the cost of its provision in order to maximise operating efficiency and so obtain value for public funds spent through the provision of detailed information. The objectives of the National Bus Co MAP system are defined in the paper and its method of data acquisition using on-board surveying techniques is described.
