PHOTOFARE - THE WORLD'S FIRST SELF-SERVICE TRAVEL PASS

The Photofare bus fare collection system was introduced by Lincoln City Transport as a result of a requirement for a travel pass system for city buses. In addition to meeting the needs of a travelcard type of system, the original parameters for the scheme included the requirement to maintain capital cost and staff involvement to an absolute minimum. Development work has resulted in the introduction of the Photofare photographic pass system by Photomaton Ltd in which the pass is automatically issued from a dispenser on the insertion of a special token. The paper summarises the reasons for developing the system, the way in which the project was introduced, and some results from the first three months of operation.
