SOCAL STUDIES MID-CALIFORNIA OIL SUPERPORT
Standard Oil Co. of California is studying the construction of an oil tanker superport of California, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, according to J.F. Mayer (Socal) at a recent hearing before the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Oakland. The single-point, offshore mooring system would be located 3 miles offshore in Estero Bay near the site of present local terminal facilities, northwest of San Luis Obispo. The site could serve both northern and southern California from a single location capable of handling tankers up to 200,000 dwt or more. The port would be connected by a submarine line to shore, and a land line would be laid to Socal's Richmond refinery in the San Francisco area.
