ON THE INFLUENCE OF EMISSION RELATED ADJUSTMENT DATA AND ENGINES PARTS ON POLLUTANT EMISSION AND FUEL CONSUMPTION OF OTTO-ENGINES (PASSENGER CARS)
EINFLUSS EMISSIONSRELEVANTER EINSTELLDATEN UND MOTORBAUTEILE AUF SCHADSTOFFEMISSION UND DRAFTSTOFFVERBRAUCH VON PKW- OTTOMOTOREN
The paper reports on the results obtained so far of three research projects which determined the influence of parts of the engine and of adjustment parameters on emissions and fuel consumption. Adjustment parameters and parts of the engine of three models of mass production cars are systematically altered and the impact on emissions and fuel consumption determined. Random samples of each 50 running vehicles of the same car models give information on the frequency of maladjustments and failures of parts of the engine. The emission level and distribution of emission of running cars are compared to emission data of new cars. Maladjustments and deficiencies of the ignition system and of the mixture formation system have a major influence on the emission behaviour; they can be observed quite frequently in running cars. Pollutant emissions and fuel consumption can be significantly reduced by proper maintenance and adjustment. The mean values of emissions and consumption can reach the level of new cars again. As a first step toward a more efficient control of running vehicles one can consider the testing of ignition timing, dwell angle and idle control of the mixture formation system in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer.
