A WIND TUNNEL BALANCE FOR MEASURING THE SIX COMPONENTS OF AERODYNAMIC FORCE AND MOMENT SPECTRA ON VEHICLES

A novel six-component strain-gauge balance has been developed to measure both the static and dynamic response of model vehicles. The balance is designed to minimise interaction, and to maximise the precision of the drag measurement and also the dynamic yawing moment and side-force measurements. From balance measurements, the aerodynamic force and moment spectra incident on the vehicle are calculated, from which the dynamic response of a prototype vehicle can be estimated. Yawing and pitching moment, side and lift force spectra for a model low-forward-entry truck with articulated van-trailer and a fast-back sedan are presented. (Author/TRRL)
