THE USE OF LIQUID ORGANIC HYDROGEN CARRIER IN ROAD VEHICLES-A STATUS REPORT

Details of an investigation are given in which a liquid organic hydrogen carrier is used for an automotive application. The mth-system using methylcyclohexane as a hydrogen carrier requires for its decomposition into toluene and hydrogen an on-board catalytic reactor. The mth-system is particularly well suited for seasonal storage of hydrogen in conjunction with a nuclear power station. The paper represents an intermediate report on the work currently in progress. Present activities deal with the investigation of suitable catalysts, the design of the catalytic reactor and the development of a spark ignited internal combustion engine for both liquid toluene and gaseous hydrogen fuels.
