ELECTRIC VEHICLE PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
The Energy Authority of NSW, conscious of the need to explore alternatives to petroleum for road transport, is conducting a programme to assess the potential of electric vehicles. There are 2 main parts of the programme. The first part involves the operation of 10 battery electric vehicles where they are called upon to carry out normal transport duties within their range limitation. Information about their behaviour is collected both by driver reaction and a vehicle mounted data acquisition system. The other main component of the programme is a vehicle assessment laboratory (val) which supports operation of the fleet and provides facilities for measurement of the performance of electric vehicles under controlled conditions. A computer- controlled chassis dynamometer can be programmed to simulate road load conditions. As well as absorbing power for normal operation it can provide power to test vehicles in their regenerative braking region. Vehicles under test can be submitted to various driving cycles to measure energy consumption and test battery performance. (Author/TRRL)
