AN ANALYSIS OF REPORTED TIRE DEFECTS IN NORTH CAROLINA ACCIDENTS

An analysis was made of North Carolina accident data for the years 1977 through 1980 to determine the relationship of tire defects to certain factors such as car size and age as well as driver age. The analysis was confined to passenger cars of model years 1974-79 and with sufficiently accurate VIN information to permit identification as large, intermediate, compact, subcompact or foreign car. Briefly, the study revealed significant differences in the relative frequency of reported tire defects based on age of car, size of car and age of driver. The range of difference is substantial, and is worthy of attention and consideration with respect to vehicle factors as well as driver factors.
