JAPANESE DESIGNERS TRY DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO AUTOMATED METROS
With conventional rail and rubber-tyred metros well established though still developing, Japanese engineers have turned their attention to less conventional answers to the urban transport problem. Developments in airports and exhibition centres have brought forward several radically different designs for medium-capacity mass transit systems. Two commercially significant monorails have already been built, and now that generous financial incentives are available, work is starting on three more. Other designers have preferred vehicles using automotive technology for the three peoplemover lines in commercial operation.
