INSTALLATION OF THE GIANT 1 MILLION BBL STORAGE TANK OF EKOFISK
Installation of the giant 1 million bbl storage tank of Ekofisk 296 km from the Norwegian coast (Abstract No. 19-51014) by Phillips Petroleum Co. Norway will require towing the tank 480 km, with the final phase to be carried out by four boats of 50,000 hp each and a fifth boat equipped with sonar to direct the operation. The lower deck of the storage facility will have an area of 7100 sq m, and the second deck, 10 m above the first, will have half that area. Sand and sea-water ballast will increase the weight of the 40,000 cu m of concrete from 215,000 tons to 300,000 tons. A central production platform will be connected to the storage tank, production wells, drilling rigs, a pumping platform, and two mooring buoys anchored to the bottom to load tankers. A 34 in. oil pipeline 352 km to England and a 36 in. gas pipeline to Germany at Emden are to be built. The combination of these installations will permit production at a rate of 1 million bbl/day.
