UNSINKABLE MOORING BUOY

An unsinkable mooring buoy has been developed by British Petroleum Co. Ltd. It is 1.37 m high, 2.13 m high, 2.13 m wide, and is constructed of 70 kg of glass fiber reinforced Cellobond polyester resin, developed by BP Chemicals International Ltd. The buoyancy, which is provided by polyurethane foam, foamed in situ, is sufficient to enable a man to stand on the buoy and work mooring lines. The polyester resin eliminates corrosion problems and is comparatively free from barnacles and other marine growths. Production costs are expected to be higher than for metal buoys, but operating costs should be much lower due to the much longer service life and to reduced maintenance needs.
