ASHTART FIELD GETS NEW TYPE OF FLOATING STORAGE

Single Buoy Moorings Inc. (a member of the IHC Holland Group) has developed a new mooring system, the SBS, which incorporates the desirable features of the single-buoy mooring systems and overcomes some of the disadvantages. The SBS system calls for a storage vessel to be connected to the buoy by a rigid arm, which hinges at the vessel in a horizontal plane and is rigidly connected to the turntable, which rotates onthe buoy body. This makes optimum use of the weather-vane principle, since the rotating point of the system is more than 100 ft in front of the vessel, rendering it more sensitive to the continuously changing wave and wind directions. Extensive tests of the system on scale models of different types of storage vessels in the Netherlands Ship Model Basin showed that the configuration is stable at all water depths and will survive a 100 year storm. These tests also confirmed that export tankers moored alongside the SBS could continue operations in 14 ft waves without causing excessive mooring forces.
