SPM BUOYS DISPATCHED

(Single-Point Mooring) Buoys were dispatched by Woodfield Rochester Ltd., of Whitstable, Kent (a Charterhouse Industries Company), for duties in the Mediterranean near the new Azzawiya refinery, owned by the Libyan National Oil Corp. The order for the two second-generation mooring buoys, worth 750,000, pounds sterling, was placed by Snam Progetti S.p.A., the main contractor for the refinery. One buoy will handle crude oil and the second will handle refined products. It has an additional line for lubricating oil, which contains a nitrile sphere to mark an interface. The buoy design is suitable for tankers up to 500,000 dwt and water depths to 400 ft. The Woodfield second-generation SPM buoy carries Lloyd's full system classification. The third- and fourth- generation buoys, of which the latter will handle liquid or vaporized LNG, will replace underbuoy and floating hoses by steel articulated pipe, incorporating permanently sealed swivel joints.
