BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH STRENGTH STEEL FOR MOTOR CARS

A review of the characteristics of high-strength steel sheet for automotive application considers: (1) characteristics of high-strength steel sheet in connection with materials specifications and vehicle design, and (2) press-forming and joining adaptability. Experience in the use of thin, cold-rolled, high-strength, steel sheet of high quality for automotive use will enable its properties to be exploited in the design of fuel-efficient, lightweight, vehicle bodies. The article examines the rigidity, dent resistance, fatigue strength, and energy absorption of various body members manufactured from high-strength steel. (TRRL)
