WHAT TECHNOLOGY WILL SOLVE THE MOBILITY PROBLEMS OF THE YEAR 2000 AND WHAT STEPS MUST BE TAKEN TODAY

Individual mobility is an indispensable part of modern life. This mobility, provided by private cars, can only be guaranteed up to and beyond the year 2000 if efforts are made to reduce fuel consumption and to develop and use alternatives to oil-derived motor fuels. The Volkswagen Company has achieved significant improvements over the past few years in the fuel economy performance of its range of vehicles. This is particularly true of the low-consumption VW Formula E models. VW has also had success in Brazil with the mass production of cars that use alcohol, derived from bio-mass, as their energy source. In European countries coal is seen as a more practical alternative source of alcohols for use as motor fuel. VW are also conducting tests on approximately 140 electric transporters (E-Mobiles) that operate on lead-acid batteries. These vehicles have been shown to be useful in applications where a range of 50 km per battery charge is sufficient. The E-Mobiles have the advantage of running on readily available fuel while producing little or no atmospheric or noise pollution. (Author/TRRL)
