NYAENGSLEDEN VAESTERAAS -81. READYMADE CEMENT STABILIZED GRAVEL AS BASE COURSE. CONSTRUCTION METHOD

NYAENGSLEDEN VAESTERAAS -81. PROV MED VERKBLANDAT CG-MATERIAL SOM BAERLAGER. BYGGNADSRAPPORT

In 1981 three test sections were constructed using readymade cement stabilised gravel as base course. Material was well graded 0-32 mm sandy gravel of 40% stone content. Cement content was 5.6% by weight. Two course thicknesses (12 and 15 cm) and two cement types, ordinary pc and blastfurnace pc, were used. Optimum water content was 6% by weight. Tests showed that cement stabilised gravel as spread had specified water content and low scatter. In view of this and high intensity compaction (5-6 passes of 10 t smooth wheeled roller and 4-6 passes of vibratory roller) degree of compaction was about 98%. Crushing strength of cylinders drilled after 17 months was on average 5.4 mpa, higher than design strength (5.0) but lower than work strength (9.4 mpa at 7 days). Traffic on test sections was 750 and 660 heavy vehicles per day respectively. Deflectometer measurements show that bedding moduli were high already after 1 month, higher for ordinary than blastfurnace cement. Modulus for ordinary pc sections showed further increase at later measurements while sections with blastfurnace pc exhibited evident drop in modulus the next year. Measurements of surface regularity in longitudinal direction were inconclusive due to presence of mud on carriageway. (TRRL)
