ROAD SURVEY CARRIED OUT IN 1980 WITH THE ROAD SURFACE TESTER (SAAB RST). SUB-REPORT ON THE ROAD ENGINEERS' AND DRIVERS' ATTITUDE TO THE TEST EQUIPMENT AND METHOD UTILIZED

A new method for measuring some important road surface characteristics was tested in the summer of 1980. Two prototypes of the road surface tester (rst) were used to make an inventory of slightly more than 20 per cent of the paved Swedish roads. 25 local road engineers from different parts of the country and 5 drivers took part in the investigation. This report summarizes the opinions of the road engineers and drivers on the system, its actual design as well as future development. Questionnaires, interviews and seminars were used in the analysis. On the whole the function of the system was looked up as satisfying. However, the durability and measuring accuracy must be improved. A number of improvements to the test equipment and measuring methods are also discussed in this report. (Author/TRRL)
