RESIDENTIAL ROADS RESEARCHED: ARE INNOVATIVE ROADS CONVENIENT TO USE?

A description is given of an investigation into the convenience to road users of innovative road layout designs. Aspects discussed include convenience to residents and visitors, how visitors found their way about, manoeuvring and parking, damage caused by vehicles and the effect on the public utilities. Amongst the conclusions reached by the investigators are the following: in order to retain the intended forward visibility commensurate with low speeds, care is needed in the positioning and choice of landscaping and regard given to the need for regular maintenance; systematic house numbering with numbers clearly visible from the road may help visitors find their way around estates; short loop roads should be given priority over cul-de-sacs where possible; with cul-de-sacs the needs of drivers of larger vehicles should be given special consideration; in relatively short cul-de-sacs the aim should be for drivers to be able to see where cars are parked. In general the investigators found that innovative estates caused no more problems than traditional with the possible exception of some larger vehicles.
