AN ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC FLOW ON URBAN ARTERIALS

The urbanisation and concentration of activities in Indian cities, and consequent transportation problems so created, has led transport planners to advocate the optimum use of available facilities. Generally, the 16-hour traffic volume surveys are used as a basis for establishing traffic patterns, the development of short-term improvements and priorities, the provision of traffic segregation, and as a guide for enforcement requirements. The paper is concerned with a project to establish traffic flow trends, and also to develop relationships between 3-hour and 16-hour traffic volumes from a limited study of traffic volume counts, taken at points located on selected arterial roads in the Delhi urban area, so that data collection costs can be reduced.
