INFLUENCE OF ANISOTROPY IN COMPACTED CLAYS AS APPLICABLE TO THE STABILITY ANALYSIS OF SLOPES

The paper details the role of anisotropy in the compaction of soils and attempts to quantify the directional variation in shear strength based on comprehensive laboratory testing. Twelve sand/clay samples with varying plasticity indices were used for the preparation of specimens of 0, 30, 45 & 45 degree orientations, and were subjected to direct shear testing. Compactive effort and moulding water content were varied to study their influence on anisotropy qualitatively. The significance of anisotropy on the stability analysis of compacted clay fills and its effect on the factor of safety are also illustrated. (TRRL)
