Experiments on the flow of settling slurries in tubes show that ribs of large pitch to diameter ratio (about 5) are useful in reducing pipeline pressure gradients and in pipeline startup. Settling slurries have coarse solid particles which settle rapidly relative to the fluid and require turbulent conditions for transport. In general, it is economic to transport a settling slurry only over short distances.
