TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY AND COST OF LNG PIPELINES
An engineering study of the transmission of natural gas in liquid form indicates that an LNG pipeline is both technically and economically feasible, but that the costs are comparable to those of conventional gas transmission, even when using the favorable innovations of 9% nickel pipe and polyurethane foam insulation. Internal friction is the primary source of heat, and this is not affected by the thickness of insulation. Enroute refrigeration for LNG pipelines was found to double the overall cost of transmission; accordingly, LNG pipelines appear limited to short-distance, special situations.
