STATE OF THE ART AND FUTURE TRENDS IN HYDROGEN-FUELLED ENGINES

Hydrogen is compared with liquefied natural gas (lng) and alcohols as an alternative motor fuel. And it is shown that hydrogen is a promising fuel for the future. Among basic properties, it is emphasized that the mol decrease caused by the combustion of hydrogen is not disadvantageous, and there is no serious danger as feared generally. Next MH and LH2 are discussed for motor vehicle storage from the overall viewpoint of tank - fuel supply system - engine performance, NOx emissions and abnormal combustion. In this respect, MH has not only the demerit of heavy weight, but also provides low engine performance, and abnormal combustion because of the difficulty in cylinder injection after the intake valve closure. Lastly, an ideal system for a hydrogen car is proposed as follows: LH2 tank--LH2 pump--two stroke engine high pressure low temperature hydrogen gas injection into the cylinder. When it was applied to passenger cars, superior performances of the engines and cars were obtained. (TRRL)
