CONTINUOUS CONSOLIDATION TESTING
There appears to be at least seven ways of carrying out tests to determine the consolidation characteristics of clays, (excluding the odeometer or Rowe cell). The author discusses the problems of selecting the most suitable procedure for continuous loading giving the salient features of each type of test, and summarising some of the advantages and disadvantages of each. Any special equipment needed is mentioned. The tests described are as follows, with abbreviated designations: standard incremental loading (std); constant rate of strain (crs); constant rate of loading (crl); constant pore pressure gradient (cg); constant pressure ratio (cpr); consolidation with restricted flow (rfc); and consolidation with control of back pressure (bpc). It appears that two distinct methods of test are needed: (a) tests on soft soils most suited to the use of the Rowe cell requiring back pressure for saturation but applied stresses will not exceed 1000 kpa, and (b) tests on stiff soils in which back pressure is not required but applied stresses up to 10 mpa would be needed.
