THE ROLE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN AREAS OF LIMITED DEMAND

RUOLO DEL TRASPORTO COLLETTIVO NELLE AREE A DOMANDA LIMITATA

Three alternatives are listed for providing a flexible response in situations of limited public transport demand: the taxi, car pooling, and the dial a ride bus. This article analyses the most rigid of these alternatives (the dial a ride) and proposes an overall system articulated in three levels of service: a service without a fixed route or of variable geometry; a service structured in sectors travelling a circuit on a reference grid; and a fixed geometry service, travelling a pre-established itinerary. Types of vehicles and their characteristics are analysed.
