ADELAIDE'S O-BAHN BUSWAY EXPERIMENT
The longest guided busway in the world, under construction in Adelaide, will make use of the O-bahn mechanical guidance System developed by Daimler-Benz and currently in use in Essen. The system enables conventional buses to travel on a restricted width track by means of a mechanical guidance system. The application in Adelaide is located in a corridor reserved some years earlier for transportation purposes. The article describes the corridor in which the O-bahn system is being constructed, some technical features of the system, and also its application in Adelaide. Other issues discussed involve the planning which led to the decision to construct the guided busway system.
