AN ADDITIVE THAT PERMITS PIPING HIGH-POUR OILS

An additive that permits piping high-pour oils has been developed by Esso Research S.A. (N.V.) and Esso Petroleum Co. Ltd. The additive, which can increase the throughput of waxy crudes without additional pumping or insulation costs, contains ethylene copolymers and more complex polymers with n-paraffin side chains attached to a polymer backbone. The additives, which hinder wax-crystal growth and modify crystal habit by the incorporation of a molecule of the additive at a growing crystal edge or dislocation, have been used in full-scale tests on the Rotterdam-Phine, Ile de France, and Finnart-Grangemouth pipelines. The test results showed that the addition of as little as 0.12% by wt of the additive to crude oils can decrease the pour point by as much as 24 deg C, with the treated crude maintaining its improved flow properties practically unchanged even after 25 days' storage in a shore tank.
