A SHIFT TOWARD LNG
Pipe manufacturers see the growing LNG industry as a market for cryogenic piping systems. Preinsulated X-50 pipe manufactured by Triangle Conduit and Cable Co., South Plainfield, N.J., is in service at LNG plants of Brooklyn Union Gas Co., Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co., and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. Vacuum-jacketed line is becoming competitive with foam insulation as evidenced by price quotations from Ametek/Straza, El Cajon, Calif., which gives a five-year evacuation guarantee on its superinsulated lines. Cosmodyne Corp., Torrance, Calif., provided the Brunei LNG plant with piping using three layers of polyurethane foam separated by reinforcing open-weave fiber-glass cloth. Fittings by Gamah Division of Stanley Aviation, Denver, are suitable for high vacuum systems; their sewage fittings have passed thermal shock tests from 250 deg-320 deg F without adverse effect. Capitol Pipe and Steel Products Co., Inc., Philadelphia has developed a low-temperature, high-yield, proprietary-grade material with parameters especially suited to the severe temperatures of Alaska's North Slope.
