UNDERWATER PIPELINE BURIAL
In a new method developed by the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, a number of sledges, each approximately 30 ft long and joined together by flexible couplings, straddle the pipeline as it rests on the sand; jets of water from the lower part of the sledges fluidize the seabed beneath the pipeline; and sledges and pipe sink into it and are automatically covered with sand. Winches carried on a support vessel pull the train of sledges along. Mechanical or hydraulic soil breakers can be fitted on the front sledge to deal with any cohesive soil, and the sledge train is easily recovered at the end of the operation.
