STEEL TUBING FOR CYROGENICS

A survey covers the types and forms of steels available for low temperature or cryogenic service; low-carbon 9% nickel steel for temperature to -320 F; performance to -452 F by austenitic stainless steels in the AISI 300 series with a minimum of 8% nickel and 18% chromium; alloys with 3% nickel for use down to -150 F; tubing applications to -50 F with a low carbon normalized fine-grained killed steel; and the need for designers and fabricators of cryogenic systems to supply the tubing manufacturer or supplier with full details on the intended application in order to obtain the best steel for the purpose at hand.
