NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURES. CHAPTER 7

The chapter reviews the current state of the art in the numerical analysis of structures and gives a brief historical survey. Structural analysis covers so many areas that a complete review would require a book rather than a chapter. The author has therefor concentrated on those areas in which he has personal experience. As a result, some fields such as dynamics and fracture mechanics have been completely omitted and the papter concentrates on the non-linear analysis of thin-walled steel and concrete structures. Optimisation of structural form has meant that such structures are becoming thinner so that the collapse behaviour generally involves a complex interaction between material and geometric non-linearities. In such circumstances, numerical techniques are essential for a realistic structural analysis. (Author/TRRL)
