SLURRY PIPELINING/WHERE THE ACTION IS
The Black Mesa Pipeline System in Arizona, due to start up soon carrying 6 million tons/yr of coal, will be completely automated, with one operator controlling the slurry preparation plant as well as the four pump stations. Movements of low sulfur coal from Montana and Wyoming to the Midwest via pipeline is estimated to be potentially cheaper by pipeline than by unit train: for volumes of the order of 18 million tons/yr, pipeline costs of $0.003/ton mile are estimated versus $0.004/ton mile for unit trains. Other potential developments in slurry pipelining are discussed briefly.
