SLURRY PIPELINING--ECONOMICS OF SOLID PIPELINING
Slurry preparation together with solids separation at the delivery point may account for more than 50% of overall solids pipelining costs for materials like gilsonite and coal. Wood chips are relatively easy to prepare. In some cases ore concentrates may be suitable for slurry pipelining without added treatment. When a proposed pipeline competes with an established railway system, the full costs of the pipeline system tend to compete with long-term incremental costs of the railroad; in such a case, the pipeline is unlikely to be competitive unless it is able to take advantage of a shorter route. In all cases of solids pipelining, the fixed costs are best justified if the system can operate continuously over a long period of time at a high rate of throughout.
