SAFETY: ITS A NEW GAME
New Federal pipeline safety standards are fully mandatory effective 11/12/70, replacing interim standards based on the B31.8 Code. the new standards relate to performance and testing rather than to detailed engineering requirements. The B31.8 Code will assume a new role, supplementing Section 192 with specifications data on materials and engineering practices. The scope of the new regulations is presented by means of a detailed outline, and the highlights of changes involved are discussed. The new regulations were put together by the U.S. Office of PIpeline Safety with the help of a 15.man Technical Pipeline Safety Standards Committee comprised of six representatives from the private sector, five representatives from government, and four representatives from the pipeline industry.
