PROGRESS REPORT ON CANADIAN SLURRY AND CAPSULE PIPE LINES

ShelPac Research & Development Ltd. (a joint venture of Canadian Pacific Railway Co. and Shell Canada Ltd.) currently has major project studies under way on a 500 mile coal slurry pipeline in Alberta for Cascade Pipe Line Ltd. (wholly owned by Canadian Pacific Railway) and a sulfur slurry line in Alberta for commercial Solids Pipe Line Co. (wholly owned by Shell Canada). Evaluation of operating economics for a slurry pipeline must include not only the slurry itself, the preparation plant, the pipeline, and the recovery plant, but also possible savings from changes in production and customer processes and material specification. Design aspects of pipe wall erosion, particle attrition, critical velocity to prevent formation of beds and plugs, heterogeneous flow, maximum acceptable pipe slope, shut-down and restart are summarized briefly by M. Wicks of Shell Oil Co. and G. H. Durham of ShelPac.
