THE EXPERIMENT WITH BAR-MARKINGS AT A JUNCTION NEAR BALK

HET EXPERIMENT MET EEN DWARSSTREEP-MARKERING OP KRUISPUNT NABIJ BALK

Following the interesting results of the application of bar-markings in the UK the province of Friesland decided to carry out an experiment on one of the main roads. Accident analysis showed that traffic approaching the junction near Balk from a specific direction did not slow down to an appropriate speed considering the junction characteristics. The introduction of bar-markings brought speeds down significantly. Because this road had no physical separation between the two traffic directions drivers tended to avoid the bar pattern by pulling out to the wrong side of the road. The police ordered the experiment to be stopped before an after study into the accident pattern could be carried out.
