STANDARD ACCIDENT DEFINITIONS: PRIMARY ACCIDENT CLASSES AND ACCIDENT TYPES
On many occasions various organisations and enquirers have lamented the lack of detailed accident data for the whole of Australia. The data were required to provide meaningful national analyses, interstate comparisons and for research purposes. This paper looks at the need for data on detailed accident types. It defines and discusses the relationship between primary accident class and accident type and the connection between accident types, collision diagrams and countermeasures. This is followed by a discussion on the uses of accident types in research and countermeasure evaluation, their relationship to national and international statistics, and the manner of determining accident type. Finally, a detailed accident type classification system for possible use in Australia is discussed in some detail. The paper includes a detailed appendix defining the coding of accident types which wouuld be used in conjunction with a chart which has been developed from the exsiting Road User Movement (RUM) system.
